Hi,
My new CD,
“BLUES FOR YOU” is finally released and available August
25th. This is definitely the closest CD I’ve made to a
live show. As the title indicates, it’s very blues
oriented.
The reaction I’ve gotten from most
people who’ve heard it has been “ It’s about time!” I
have to thank my new record label, E-1 entertainment for
having encouraging me to make this record.
One
departure on this CD is that even though it’s still a
contemporary jazz, mostly instrumental recording, there
is an unprecedented 4 vocal tracks. I called on a few
friends that I knew would be up for singing songs with
us. Marc Cohn, Billy Squier, John Waite and Peter Wolf
each sang a song ( Kirk Whalum also recorded a song
singing with his saxophone, the way ONLY he can) and I
couldn’t be happier about how those songs, as well as
the rest of the CD came out.
I did want to
mention that I was able to get my dream band into the
studio with me. I’ve played so many jam gigs around New
York with these guys and it’s ALWAYS been magic. The
only problem is that they are also the busiest musicians
on the planet so in the past I’ve found it difficult to
get their schedules to coincide. I really wanted to cut
the entire CD with the same band so when 4 days actually
lined up I booked it. Now we had Shawn Pelton on
drums ( from the Saturday Night Live band and almost
every record that anyone's recorded in NY over the last
10 years or so) Kenny White on keyboards who’s been very
busy with his own career as a solo artist and Tony
Garnier on Acoustic and electric bass. Tony’s been
playing with Bob Dylan for many years who seems to keep
him extremely busy. Other than all being individually
great musicians, there is a chemistry that happens with
this band that I’ve never experienced
before.
Another first is that John Porter
produced the CD. I’ve been such a fan of the records
he’s produced (Los Lonely Boys and Taj Mahall just to
name a few). I was so great to have him there with us.
We cut the music live in 4 days. The special guests came
in and out as the 4 (plus John Porter makes 5) of us
camped out in the studio. The only overdubs were the
horn section that consisted of Rick Braun (trumpet),
David Woodford (sax) and Nick Lane (trombone,
arranger.) If you get a chance, please check it out.
